Understanding the Power of Genetic Testing and Its Role in Health

Understanding the Role of Genetics Genes are like instructions that tell the body how to grow, function, and develop. Sometimes, changes in these instructions—called genetic variants—can lead to health problems or affect development.
In some cases, a healthcare provider can diagnose a condition based on physical symptoms alone. But for many patients, additional insight is needed. That’s where genetic testing becomes essential.

Getting Started Is Simple.

1

Your overall health

2

How to manage or treat a condition.

3

What to expect in the future

4

Where to find helpful support and resources

Advanced options like genome and exome sequencing offer a powerful, all-in-one look at your genetic makeup. These comprehensive tests can identify underlying causes more quickly—potentially reducing the need for multiple rounds of testing and helping your provider reach a diagnosis sooner.

What Are the Possible Genetic Testing Results?

Genetic testing can lead to several types of results. Each one provides different insights and may guide the next steps in your care.

Positive (Diagnostic Result)

  • A genetic change known to cause symptoms or a specific genetic disorder was found. This result can explain your health condition and help guide treatment or management.
  • Negative (Non-Diagnostic Result)

  • No genetic changes were found that explain your current condition. In some cases, your provider may recommend follow-up testing based on your symptoms and medical history.
  • Variant of Uncertain Significance (VUS)

  • A genetic change was found, but current scientific evidence cannot confirm whether it’s linked to your health condition. Your provider may recommend additional testing or monitoring as research continues to evolve.
  • Secondary Findings

  • A genetic change was found that’s unrelated to the reason the test was ordered. This is specific to exome and genome tests and is optional to receive. Secondary findings occur in about 3% of people and may reveal increased risks for conditions like cancer or heart disease.
  • The Importance of Informed Consent

Before proceeding with genetic testing, patients—or their legal guardians—must provide informed consent. This ensures they fully understand the risks, benefits, and limitations of testing and agree to move forward based on that understanding.

What to Expect Before, During, and After Genetic Testing

Here’s a simple step-by-step overview of how the process works:

    Test Ordered

Your healthcare provider selects the most appropriate genetic test, reviews your medical history and family background, and submits the order.

    Sample Collected

A sample—usually a blood draw or cheek swab—is collected and sent to East Valley Diagnostics laboratory for analysis.

    Lab Analysis

Once received, our lab processes and analyzes the sample to look for genetic changes that may explain your symptoms.

    Results Delivered

Your provider receives the test results and reviews them to guide next steps.

    Next Steps

Depending on the results, your provider may recommend speaking with a licensed genetic counselor for further explanation, support, and care planning.

    Genetic Counseling Servcies

Genetic counseling can play a vital role in helping you understand your health and make informed decisions. Your provider may recommend genetic counseling before and/or after testing. East Valley Diagnostics offers comprehensive counseling services through referral from your healthcare provider.
A genetic counselor is a licensed healthcare professional trained in medical genetics and counseling. They specialize in making complex information easier to understand and provide meaningful guidance for you and your family.
